Cox gets first
USAC win
Billy Cox of
Herriman, Utah scored his first AutoTrader Ford
Focus Midget Series victory of the year on
Saturday night at Rocky Mountain Raceways. Cox
used a 1st turn pass on the 19th lap to get
around leader James Powell for the win. Powell
started from the pole and jumped to a sizable
early lead. Bob Brewer moved up from his 5th
starting position into 2nd and began to close
the distance catching Powell on lap 10. On lap
16, Brewer's car jumped out of gear in Turn 4
while attempting to pass Powell. Cox and Savage
used the recovery time to catch and pass Brewer.
Powell attempted to retake Cox exiting turn 4
with the two making contact. Powell slid to the
infield allowing the third place Savage to move
to second. Kipp Posey brought the #37
Isagenix-Wysong car in 5th.
With optimal
track conditions Savage set a new qualifying
record of 15.440. 87.350 mph. Savage's fast time
was .001 quicker than runner up Cox. Heat races
were won by Savage and Cox. Savage was
attempting to become the first Ford Focus driver
in USAC history to win 5 consecutive victories
but fell short.
Normal
competitors Charley Hanna and Jamie Wysong were
unable to participate on Saturday due to other
obligations but the field was bolstered by the
debut of the #49 FRB Welding car of Lindy
Luttmer. Lindy is the daughter of long time
Sprint Car owner Frank Burdett. Lindy's car
carries the #49 used by her grandfather on his
midget.
