Powell wins first USAC feature

James Powell of Herriman, Utah scored his first career USAC victory on Saturday night at Rocky Mountain Raceways after apparent winner Kipp Posey was penalized one position for improperly advancing his position on a Lap 1 restart. As of Monday morning, Posey has filed an appeal with the United States Auto Club. Starting on the outside front row Powell led laps 1-14 after a Lap 1 restart. Posey, advancing from a third row position took the lead on Lap 14, surrendered the lead to Powell on Lap 22 before re-taking the lead for good on Lap 24. Powell arrived late in the day after receiving his new car early Saturday afternoon.

Heat races were won by Jeff Kelley and Posey who raced side by side with Tim Savage for several laps to win by mere inches.

Posey continued his dominance of qualifying at RMR  by posting his third consecutive fast time, dating back to September 2007.
